Playa Berdiales, aka Lighthouse Beach, is a small cove in the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge on the Caribbean Sea, right next to Faro Berdiales, the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse. (Berdiales is the name of the family who was said to have operated the lighthouse a century ago.) The beach sand is golden white, and the water a beautiful blue. It is a small, flat half-moon shaped beach with a small cliff on the right side, rocky outcrops on the left, and a tiny rock cayito just off the shore. This beach faces directly into the tradewinds and can gather more than it’s share of seaweed and ocean trash at times. It is very rough and usually not safe for swimming. It’s a great break spot after visiting the old lighthouse.
Playa Berdiales no destaca en ningún aspecto y el agua no suele ser muy apta para familias debido a las rocas y las olas (de ahí la necesidad histórica del faro). No es el típico lugar para pasar un día en la playa, pero si vas caminando hasta el faro, vale la pena bajar las escaleras para ver la playa.
No hay pabellones y solo una palmera cocotera solitaria que da sombra, así que planifique en consecuencia.
The final trek is closed and you’ll need to park in the parking lot and then walk the rest of the road to lighthouse. Its a wide road and easy to walk.
