Playa Berdiales, aka Lighthouse Beach, is a small cove in the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge on the Caribbean Sea, right next to Faro Berdiales, the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse. (Berdiales is the name of the family who was said to have operated the lighthouse a century ago.) The beach sand is golden white, and the water a beautiful blue. It is a small, flat half-moon shaped beach with a small cliff on the right side, rocky outcrops on the left, and a tiny rock cayito just off the shore. This beach faces directly into the tradewinds and can gather more than it’s share of seaweed and ocean trash at times. It is very rough and usually not safe for swimming. It’s a great break spot after visiting the old lighthouse.
Playa Berdiales ist in keiner Hinsicht besonders toll und das Wasser ist aufgrund der Felsen und Wellen oft nicht sehr familienfreundlich (daher die historische Notwendigkeit des Leuchtturms). Es ist kein typischer Ort für einen „Tag am Strand“, aber wenn Sie zum Leuchtturm laufen, lohnt sich der kurze Weg die Treppe hinunter, um den Strand zu erkunden.
Es gibt keine Pavillons und nur eine einzelne Kokospalme, die Schatten spendet. Planen Sie also entsprechend.
The final trek is closed and you’ll need to park in the parking lot and then walk the rest of the road to lighthouse. Its a wide road and easy to walk.
