One of the best things about snorkeling in Vieques is how easy it is to do. You don’t always need a boat tour or complicated gear—many of the island’s best snorkeling spots are just steps from the beach. Snorkelers frequently see angelfish, parrot fish, and other reef species along the rock formations. We’ve regularly found lot’s of lobsters here and often there are food trucks near by!
Starfish Beach
When conditions are right, Starfish Beach offers fantastic snorkeling. The area near the old pier pilings toward the west side is especially interesting underwater. Snorkelers often see rays, sea turtles, and plenty of fish here. It’s also a convenient spot because you can easily explore other nearby beaches the same day.
Punta Arenas (Green Beach)
Located on the western end of the island, Punta Arenas is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Vieques—and for good reason. The water is often calm and clear, and the reef areas provide excellent habitat for fish and coral. Many people consider this one of the best places on the island to see marine life. Saturdays are extremely busy in the area as many large charters come in from the mainland to spend the day on the beach. Week days are much slower.
