The Best Snorkeling Spots and beaches in Vieques (Plus What to Pack and Local Tour Companies)
One of the best things about snorkeling in Vieques is how easy it is to do. You don’t always need a boat tour or complicated gear—many of the island’s best snorkeling spots are just steps from the beach. If you want to explore shallow reefs full of colorful fish or spotting sea turtles and rays in deeper water, Vieques offers incredible underwater experiences for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.
However, conditions can change quickly. Rain, wind, and waves can stir up sediment and make the water cloudy. If you arrive at a beach and can’t see the bottom from shore, snorkeling probably won’t be very good that day. The best tip is simple: check the water before getting in and be willing to try another beach. Often the opposite side of the island will have much clearer water. If one beach is rough that day and not good for snorkleing simply pack up and head to the other side of the island or even try Mosquito Pier also known as Rompeolas. Stay on the left calmer side and you are sure to sea everything from lobster, fish and even a sea turtle if you are lucky.
While most beaches on Vieques can offer decent snorkeling when conditions are calm, there are a few spots that consistently stand out.
Best Snorkeling Beaches in Vieques
El Gallito (North Shore)
The right side of El Gallito is one of the most reliable snorkeling areas on the island. The rocky sections create natural habitat for many species of fish, and visibility is often good when the water is calm. You’ll commonly see schools of colorful reef fish, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a lobster hiding in the rocks. The right side always delivers for us. It’s a super easy beach to access and never crowded.
Airport Beach
The rocky areas around Airport Beach are another great snorkeling location. It’s easy to access and tends to have plenty of marine life. Snorkelers frequently see angelfish, parrot fish, and other reef species along the rock formations. We’ve regularly found lot’s of lobsters here and often there are food trucks near by!
Starfish Beach
When conditions are right, Starfish Beach offers fantastic snorkeling. The area near the old pier pilings toward the west side is especially interesting underwater. Snorkelers often see rays, sea turtles, and plenty of fish here. It’s also a convenient spot because you can easily explore other nearby beaches the same day.
Punta Arenas (Green Beach)
Located on the western end of the island, Punta Arenas is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in Vieques—and for good reason. The water is often calm and clear, and the reef areas provide excellent habitat for fish and coral. Many people consider this one of the best places on the island to see marine life. Saturdays are extremely busy in the area as many large charters come in from the mainland to spend the day on the beach. Week days are much slower.

Depending on conditions, you may also find great snorkeling at:
